Membership:
The Student Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society (SVECCS) is an
interactive organization for veterinary & veterinary technician students
interested in the growing field of small animal emergency and critical care medicine. Yearly membership dues are $10, which
entitles students to free dinner at meetings and wet labs.
ICU
Shadowing:
A unique feature of this club is the opportunity for members to participate
in ICU Shadowing. This program
involves gaining exposure to emergency and critical cases through occasional
shifts in the veterinary college's small animal intensive care unit. Students
are able to assist with restraint, treatments, and monitoring of patients; at
the same time, they learn about disease processes and patient progression
through interaction with clinicians, technicians, and junior/senior students.
Meetings
and Wet Labs:
SVECCS also holds bimonthly meetings featuring discussions on such subjects
as orthopedic emergencies, common exotic animal emergencies, equine dystocia,
CPR, Tylenol toxicity and management of the blocked cat.
"Wet labs," geared to instructing members on a variety of emergency
procedures such as CPR and feeding tube placement, are offered to students
several times each academic year.
IVECCS
Student members have the opportunity to attend the annual International
Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Symposium. This year the symposium will take place on September 26-30 in New Orleans, LA. Come to
meetings or go to http://iveccs.org for more information.
Small
Animal Critical Care Conference:
SVECCS
is also responsible for the organization of the annual MSU CVM Small Animal
Critical Care Conference. This
conference is open to clinicians seeking continuing education credits in the
field. SVECCS members are
encouraged to help in the organization of the event.
